BMW's 3series is arguably the world's most successful prestige car, but even though it's available as a coup a cabriolet, a compact and an estate, the vast majority of people buy it as a saloon. Estate (Touring in BMWspeak) versions of the 3series occupy just 13 per cent of total UK 3series sales.
Which is strange, because although it's the least popular 3series derivative, the estate is very much the car that a lot of manufacturers would like to make. However, the Touring is a pretty strange car. It isn't big enough and lacks the completely flat loadbed floor that would mark it out as a true load carrier, nor does it have the raked looks and low roofline that denote the "action" estate much loved in Europe despite occasionally (in the case of Alfa Romeo's 156 Sportwagon) having a smaller carrying capacity than the sibling saloon.
In its latest guise, the 3series Touring also fails to capitalise on BMW's weird and wacky styling programme, as set out by former design head Chris Bangle. There's no doubt that it is a clever, almost showoff design. At the base of the windscreen there are up to eight perfect shut lines between the various body and trim panels not something a lot of rival manufacturers could manage.
Yet you can't help feeling that BMW lost confidence when it came to redesigning its biggestselling car; both saloon and estate have a slight couldn'tthinkofanythingbetter appearance as a result.
